Python & Node.js
Python & Node.js Development for Apps, AI and APIs
Secure backends, APIs, integrations and data pipelines for web, mobile and AI products.
Behind every good app is a backend that does the real work: storing data securely, running business rules, talking to other systems and serving the web and mobile apps your users see. Python and Node.js are two of the most widely used languages for that work. Smarterapps Ai is an Australian AI and app development company that has been building software since 2010. We build backends, APIs, data pipelines and integrations in Python and Node.js, and we pick between them, or use both, based on what each part of your product needs.
Python or Node.js: which does what
Python
The leading language for AI, machine learning and data work. We use Python for data pipelines, analytics, document processing, machine learning models and the services that connect apps to language models. Typical frameworks include FastAPI and Django.
Node.js
JavaScript and TypeScript on the server, built for many simultaneous connections. We use Node.js for APIs behind web and mobile apps, real-time features such as live tracking, chat and notifications, and services that share code with a React or React Native front end.
Many of our products use both: a Node.js API for the apps and a Python service for AI and data, running side by side on the same cloud.
What we build
APIs for web and mobile apps
Secure, documented REST APIs with sign-in, roles, validation, rate limits and monitoring, ready for iPhone, Android and web front ends. → React Native apps · React web apps
System integrations
Two-way connections between your CRM, finance, inventory, HR and industry systems, with error handling and retries so data doesn’t silently go missing. → Workflow automation · Xero & MYOB
Real-time services
Live location, status updates, messaging and notifications using WebSockets and event streams, the kind of plumbing on-demand and tracking apps rely on. → Rideshare and on-demand apps
Data pipelines and reporting
Scheduled imports, data cleaning and transformation, and the reporting databases behind dashboards and forecasts.
IoT and device backends
Services that receive readings from sensors, beacons and other hardware, store them and turn them into alerts and dashboards. → IoT development
Backends for AI features
The server-side layer that calls language models, retrieves your documents, enforces permissions and logs every request. For the AI features themselves, see our dedicated pages. → LLM & GPT integration · Document AI · AI agents
How we build backends that last
- Security first: least-privilege access, encrypted data, secrets kept out of code, and dependencies kept up to date
- Typed and tested: TypeScript and Python type hints, automated tests and code review on every change
- Observable: structured logs, error tracking, health checks and alerts, so problems are found before users report them
- Documented APIs: OpenAPI specifications so your team, partners and future developers can use the API with confidence
- Repeatable deployments: automated pipelines and infrastructure defined in code
- Australian hosting: AWS or another major cloud, with Australian regions available. → Sovereign AI & privacy
Python, Node.js, .NET or Laravel?
We work across all four. Python and Node.js are our usual choice for new app and AI backends. If your organisation runs on Microsoft, .NET may suit better, and if you already have PHP systems, Laravel may be the sensible path. → .NET development · Laravel & PHP · All technologies
Taking over an existing backend
If you’ve inherited a Python or Node.js service that is fragile, undocumented or several versions behind, we start with a written review of code, dependencies, security and hosting. Then we stabilise, add monitoring and tests, and improve in safe steps.
How we run a backend project
- Discovery: data, systems, users, volumes and security requirements
- Design: architecture, data model and API contract agreed before the build
- Build in short sprints: working endpoints and integrations at every demo. A first version now takes weeks, not months
- Launch: deployment, monitoring and documentation
- Support: security updates, scaling and new features
Our team’s track record
All projects were delivered by our team: Smarterapps Ai, part of the Combine TRS group. We choose the stack for each project on its merits.
- Treasury Wine Estates: IoT sensors tracking stock levels, temperature, humidity and movement, feeding a machine learning platform for dashboards, demand forecasts and alerts
- Rideshare platform (operator name withheld by agreement): matching, dispatch, payments, live location and notification services behind rider and driver apps that are live on both stores
- RideScore Active Schools with We Ride Australia and Sunshine Coast Council: a backend and data platform that turns beacon reader events into trips, points and instant parent notifications
- Machine Pilot: a product built by our team that answers plant operators’ questions with ordered, auditable citations from manuals, SOPs and PLC exports
Frequently asked questions
Should my backend use Python or Node.js?
Python is usually best for AI, machine learning and data processing. Node.js is usually best for real-time features and APIs that share code with a JavaScript front end. Many products use both.
Can you integrate with our existing systems?
Yes. We connect to systems through their APIs where available, and through files, databases or webhooks where they aren’t, with error handling and monitoring.
Can you build an API for our mobile app?
Yes. We design and build secure, documented APIs for iPhone, Android and web apps, plus the admin portal behind them.
Where will the backend be hosted?
On AWS or another major cloud, with Australian regions available when your data needs to stay onshore.
How much does backend development cost?
It depends on the number of integrations, data volumes and security requirements. We quote after a short discovery. → What drives cost
Do I own the code?
Yes. You own the source code, IP and cloud accounts.
