If you are a mobile app developer who already has a successful app, you may or may not know the importance of updating it on a regular basis to engage your users. Every update you make shows your customers, App Store and/or Google Play, that you are committed to keeping your product relevant and current.
Here are some tips for making your first update.
Always Frame Bug Fixes in Best Possible Light
Instead of a generic term such as “bug fixes and improvements,” tell the user what benefits they will receive or what problem it will solve. A little bit of humour or tact can go a long way. Also, make sure people who haven’t bought or used the app yet can understand what the updates are for.
Short Attention Span Theatre
A lot of people have short attention spans. Use bullet points instead of big sentences or paragraphs when describing your fixes. Try to use sentences that are punchy and to the point. Each benefit gets one short sentence. Think of it as sales copy, because that’s exactly what it is. You are “reselling” to your current users.
Two Ears, One Mouth
Remember that you have two ears and one mouth for a reason. Listen to customer feedback and take it seriously. Look at all customer reviews from your social media pages, Google Play and the App Store.
Not only will they tell you the updates they want, they will even tell you what language to use when you release the updates.
Provide a Support Email
Customers are going to have problems. An email address for “tech support” is extremely helpful and will help customer satisfaction greatly. This can increase revenue from the app and also make current customers more likely to buy subsequent products from you.
